ये ठन्डे (सर्दी) का मौसम है. सबलोग निहाली (रजाई) ओढ़कर सो रहे हैं. ये मौसम अजीमगंज जियागंज में नीमस, पीठा और मेवा सलोनी खिचड़ी खाने का मौसम होता है. शहरवाली रईस लोग खाने पीने के बहुत शौकीन थे और बढ़िया बढ़िया खाने की चीजें यहाँ पर बनती थी. ठन्डे के दिन में भोरे भोर नीमस खाने का मज़ा ही कुछ और है.

याद आता है जब भोरे भोर माँ या दादीमा सुते हुए को उठा देती थीं और बोलती थीं नीमस खा लो. जब हम बच्चे थे तब रात को औंटाया हुआ दूध रात को खुले छत में कपडे से बांध कर रख दिया जाता था. उस को ओस में रखा जाता था. सुबह उस दूध को घोंटा जाता था जिससे फेन निकलता था. उस फेन में इलाइची, केशर और गुलाबजल डाल कर कटोरे में दिया जाता था.

इसी तरह से खाने के समय पीठा बनता था. मीठा बनता था मावे से और नमकीन भापिया, दाल का. जब हूँ वहां रहते थे तब तो पीठे का न्योता भी होता था और उसमे बाई बेटी को जरूर बुलाया जाता था.

इसके साथ ही वहां मेवा सलोनी का खिचड़ी भी बनता था. मेवे का खिचड़ी मीठा होता था जिसमे बिदाम, पीसता, इलाइची और केशर डलता था. काजू और अखरोट नहीं डाला जाता था. सलोनी का खिचड़ी मटर से बनता था. यह खिचड़ी सब जगह बन्ने वाले पुलाव से अलग था क्योंकि इसमें दही डाला जाता था. दही से इसमें थोडा खट्टापण भी आता था जो इसके स्वाद को बाधा देता था.

अब भी शहरवाली समाज में ये चीजें बनती है. जो लोग अब बहार रहने लग गए हैं वो लोग भी शायद बनाते होंगे. यहाँ जयपुर में मैंने लोगों को कई बार ये सब चीजें खिलाई है और वो लोग बहुत पसंद करते हैं.

Rai Budh Singh Bahadur School

Rai Budh Singh Bahadur Dudhoria (Badi Kothi, Azimganj) was a famous Shaharwali Zemindar in Azimganj. A school was established on his memory. It was a primary school that was upgraded to a higher secondary school. It was the only high school (RBSBHSM) at Azimganj till 1965.

Large numbers of students studies in the school including me. Rai Budh Singh Bahadur primary school is situated behind Badi Kothi and opposite to Keshar Kumari Balika Bidyalaya at Azimganj City. RBSB High school is situated at Baraduari on way to Don Bosco school. The high school is near Azimganj Jn.

Both the schools have a track record of good result. RBSB schools at Azimganj are presently managed by the government.

A report -- Murshidabad Heritage Festival 2011

The first heritage festival in Murshidabad, “Resurgence - Murshidabad Heritage Festival 2011” (MHF) was organized by the Tourism Department of Govt. of West Bengal in association with Murshidabad Heritage Development Society, and with the support of Crafts Council of West Bengal, West Bengal Kayaking & Canoeing Association, Union Ministry of Culture, Art of Living Foundation and others in Azimganj, Jiaganj and Lalbagh-Nashipur on 17 & 18 December, 2011. A gathering of 3000 invitees enjoyed the two-day festival. A detailed report follows.

Cuisine

The love of food, especially all things sweet and spicy, is an apt description of the Sheherwali (The Jains of Murshidabad are known as the Sheherwali community) cuisine. There was a wide spread of delicacies over the 2 days, right from Breakfast to Dinner. Each meal was clearly thought out to give people an experience of this refined vegetarian cuisine. The flavour and aroma of the food titillated the palate of all and has drawn a huge fan-following.

People showed a keen interest for the recipes of various dishes and were thrilled when the Sheherwali Cuisine Recipe book was released at the festival.

The lady members of the Sheherwali Community of Azimganj & Jiaganj took immense pride and initiative in setting up food stalls of popular dishes at the Katgola grounds. This first initiative, in a cooperative spirit was a lot of fun and the demand from the visitors has made them yearn for the next festival.

Boat Race on River Bhagirathi

The local boatmen decorated their boats colourfully and competed in an exciting race. The gusto for competing was provided by the rhythm of the dhakis in each boat. The improvised-kayak race added to the gaiety. The Marshalls were in Kayaks taken from Kolkata for the race. People took a break from their daily chores to cheer their favourite teams from the especially-decorated boats, the party boat from Kolkata, and from the river banks. The boatmen were delighted to receive prizes and certificates at the Prize Distribution Ceremony, This romance on the river has enthused people to aspire for a Boat Club and a training centre in Azimganj

Cultural Programme/Entertainment

The cultural programme on both days was set in the backdrop of the recently-restored magnificent Katgola Palace. On Day One, Priti Patel & troupe’s spectacular Manipuri dance performance with Vedic chants, called “Agni” left the gathering spell-bound. The show blended Vedic slokas, poise and grace with feisty martial arts.
On Day 2, the sufi quawali by Haidar Buksh and group of Lucknow was appreciated by all. The local folk dance on the second day was a delight. The fireworks display as the grand finale dazzled the large gathering.

Competition for the Youth

To make the youth conscious of heritage preservation, several competitions and activities were organized. Heritage-themed quiz, painting & photography competitions were conducted for students. This evoked a large participation from across the region.

Crafts Bazaar

Crafts Council of West Bengal organized a crafts bazaar comprising of Indian handicrafts. The bazaar offered a wide variety of products – right from Handloom Saris and Kashmiri shawls to woven mats and bangles.
The local folk performers entertained the large gathering with acrobatic stunts, dance, music and drama.

Puja and Jain Temple Visits

A key attraction of the 2 day festival was visits to the 12 old and beautiful Jain temples in the twin-town. The puja at Lord Adinath’s temple in Katgola was specially uplifting. A large number of visitors regaled in the energy created.

Endorsements

The restoration work of several old monuments and properties has drawn good appreciation. The arrangements made by the travel agents for the many outstation participants received good approval.

While visitors from California, New York, Tokyo, Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, Gujarat, Kolkata and nearby districts enjoyed the festival, several local Unions and Bodies have still to catch the uplifting spirit. This spirit alone can lead to the socio-economic development of Bengal.

Many members took up strategic responsibilities. The entire Governing Body boldly faced the challenges of such a grand function, put up in association with so many Government departments and other bodies. Government machinery worked overtime for a smooth festival. The Convenor, Sanjay Doogar supported by the Committee, co-ordinated a spectacular program.

This is a sad news which I have to share with heavy heart. My sister, Moni Nahar, w/o Sri Surendra Nahar, Pune expired today (11.1.2011) afternoon. She was daughter of late Sri Samarendra Pat (Beta Babu) and Srimati Putul Kumari Kothari and grand daughter of late Sri Chandrapat Kothari of Azimganj.

Sri Samarendra Pat Kothari was elder brother of my father Sri Dhirendra Pat Kothari. She left her daughter Vandana and son Vishal behind her.

मुर्शिदाबाद में आम की किस्में

मुर्शिदाबाद में आम की अनेक किस्में पाई जाती है. आम की इतनी किस्में और कहीं भी नहीं मिलती. बहुत से आम तो ऐसे हैं जो की और कहीं भी नहीं पाई जाती है. कहा जाता है की यहाँ आम की पांच सौ से ज्यादा किस्मे होती थी. सौ डेढ़ सौ किस्में तो मैंने भी देखी है.

यहाँ के आमों में "कोहीतुर" सबसे महंगा और शानदार होता है. इसे रूई में रख कर पकाया जाता था. कोहीतुर के अलावा विमली, सारंगा, चंपा, जूही चंपा, गुलाब ख़ास, सुंदरी, सादोल्ला (हिमसागर), काला पहाड़, मुलायम जाम, अनारस, भवानी, रानी, बीड़ा, पांजा आदि आम भी प्रसिद्ध है. यहाँ के आम अलग अलग फलों के स्वाद एवं अलग अलग फूलों के सुगंध लिए हुए होते हैं. फाजली आम बहुत ही बड़ा होता है तो अनारस बहुत छोटा. सारंगा आम बहुत मीठा होता है लेकिन अनारस खट्टा मीठा. चंपा आम चंपा फूल की खुसबू समाये रखता है और मुलायम जाम में जामुन का स्वाद पाया जाता है.

इसके अलावा यहाँ का कचमिट्ठी आम भी प्रसिद्ध है. यहं आम कच्चे में भी मीठा होता है. इसे भी शहरवाली लोग बहुत शौक से खाते हैं.

शहरवाली समाज में आम खाने की कला

मुर्शिदाबाद आमों के लिए प्रसिद्ध है. यहाँ जितने प्रकार के आम मिलते हैं उतने और कहीं नहीं. यहाँ के नवाबों व रईसों ने आम की अनेक स्वादिष्ट एवं सुगन्धित किस्में विकसित करवाई. यहाँ के आम बड़े नाजुक किस्म के होते हैं. शहरवाली समाज आमों का बड़ा शौकीन था व आज भी है. यहाँ आम खाना एक कला के रूप में विकसित हो गया था. सिर्फ आम खाना ही नहीं परन्तु आम को तैयार करना भी एक कला था.

आम को पेड़ों से यूँ ही नहीं तोडा जाता था. आम तोड़ने में भी नजाकत थी. इसके लिए एक लम्बे बांस एवं हंसिया ( धारदार ) .का उपयोग किया जाता था. हंसिये के ठीक नीचे बांस में एक छिका बंधा होता था. पेड़ से टूटने पर आम उस छिके में आ जाता था. छिके का प्रयोग आम को जमीं पर गिरने से बचाने के लिए होता था. आम को पेड़ से कच्चा ही तोडा जाता था. उन आमों को फिर एक टोकरी में सजाया जाता था व बीच बेच में आम के पत्ते डाल दिए जाते थे जिससे एक आम को दुसरे आम से रगड़ न लगे. रगड़ लगने से आम दागी हो जाता था.

टोकरी में रख कर आमों को घर लाया जाता था और उसे बड़ी हिफाज़त से पकाया जाता था. सामान्यतः आमों को लकड़ी के पाटे पर पत्तों के ऊपर एक एक कर बिछा देते थे एवं उसके ऊपर फिर से पत्ते ढक देते थे. समय समय पर उन आमों को ऊपर नीचे पलता जाता था जिससे वो आम चरों तरफ से बराबर व सही तरीके से पक सके. पके हुए आमों को कई घंटों तक पानी में भिगो कर रखते थे जिससे उसके अन्दर की गर्मी निकल जाये. इस क्रिया से आम स्वास्थ्य वर्धक व स्वादिस्ट एवं शीतल हो जाता था.

शहरवालिओं को आम छिलने में महारत हासिल थी. आम को पहले एक तरफ से छिला जाता था. छिलने के बाद आम के गुदे के ऊपर चक्कू से निशान बनाया जाता था व उसके बाद उसे बनाया जाता था. एक तरफ से आम के फांक निकल लेने के बाद ही उसे दूसरी तरफ से छिला जाता था. इस से आम काला नहीं पड़ता था व उसकी सुन्दरता बनी रहती थी.

परंपरागत रूप से घर के बड़े व मर्दों को गुठली नहीं दी जाती थी. प्रायः कर के घर के बच्छे गुठली चुसना पसंद करते थे या फिर उसका अमरस बनाने में उपयोग कर लिया जाता था.

आम के मौसम में नाते रिश्तेदारों के यहाँ आम भेजने की भी प्रथा थी. इस प्रकार एक दुसरे के यहाँ आमों का आदान प्रदान भी होता था. अपनी अपनी हैसियत के अनुसार कम या ज्यादा आम भेजे जाते थे.

The work has been accomplished in a short period. The Gumbaz of the temple will be decorated with gemstones. Moon stones will be studded with in few months. It is planned that a "Dhwajdand" will be placed on the top of the "Shikhar" of the temple. A flag will be remained hoisted over the "Dhwajdand" after the ceremony.

The temple is situated near hanuman Than in Azimganj.

Mahavir Mandal in Azimganj and Jiaganj

Mahavir Mandal was the endeavor of few children in Azimganj in 1977. There was a Chaturmas of Sri Pujya sri Jin Chandra Suri in Azimganj in he year 1977. Few of the children decided to present him a gift.They gathered and start thinking of a gift. Sri Pujya ji was learning Bengali language at that point of time. Late Kali Prasad Bhattacharya, Asst. Head Master of RBSB High school was teaching him the said language. The boys and girls together decided to gift him a Bengali- English dictionary that cost them Rs. 18/ only. It looks little amount but it was a big amount for those children. However, they could collect some Rs. 15-16. Srimati Bhanumati Bachchhawat encouraged the children and paid the rest of the amount. The children gathered to gift the dictionary founded an organization called Mahavir Bal Mandal. Later on the word "Bal" was removed and the name of the organization became "Mahavir Mandal".

I feel proud of myself, even today, as I. Jyoti Kothari was the founder secretary of Mahavir Mandal. Dilip Chhajed was the first President of the same. I was 14 at that time and Dilip was 16. We were the eldest male members. My sister Sujata Kothari and Anita Bachchhawat, daughter of Smt. Bhanumati were among elder female members. None of the members were adult at that time.

Smt. Bhanumati Bachchhawat encouraged them by providing a room in her residence that was used as office of the said org. Later on, Mahavir Mandal was provided with a room in "Bada Upasra" at Sri Neminath temple.
Mahavir Mandal worked very well. We arranged for games and sports, Physical raining, daily coaching of the younger students and organized musical nights (Bhajan sandhya). Mahavir Mandal had started and run music school and sewing schools. It had organized several exhibitions and multifarious functions. The organization had helped the tourists (Yatri) coming for the purpose of pilgrimage. They also organize "Puja" and cleaning in the temples. A "Book Bank" and a library was also established in the office premises. Mahavir Mandal have provided a "Tube well" in Rambagh Dadabadi which is still working there.

Sunil Churoria and Bikas Chhajed also adorn the chair as secretary of Mahavir Mandal. Surprisingly, we three, me, Jyoti Kothari is now working as secretary, Jaipur Khartar Gachchh Sangh; Sunil as secretary Azimganj Sri Sangh and Bikas as secretary, Murshidabad Sangh, Kolkata.

Later on, probably in 1980, Mahavir Mandal was expanded and a new branch was opened in Jiaganj.

मुर्शिदाबाद हेरिटेज डेवलपमेंट सोसायटी की स्थापना मुर्शिदाबाद की विरासत बचाने का एक प्रयास है. प्राचीन काल में मुर्शिदाबाद का क्षेत्र गौड़ के नाम से जाना जाता था. औरंगजेब के सिपहसालार मुर्शीदकुली खान ने इसे बसाया एवं ढाका के स्थान पर सन १७०४ में इसे बंगाल, बिहार, एवं उडिस्सा की राजधानी बनाया. जब मुर्शीद कुली खान यहं आये तो उनके साथ उनके परम मित्र जगत सेठ मानकचंद गेलडा को भी साथ लाये. जैनों के उत्कर्ष का काल यहाँ पर तभी से शुरू हुआ.
यह नवाबों के शहर के नाम से भी जाना जाता रहा.

मुर्शीदकुली खान के बाद नवाब अलीवर्दी खान, नवाब सुजाउद्दीन आदि ने नवाब की गद्दी संभाली. सिराज़ुद्दौला मुर्शिदाबाद के अंतिम स्वतंत्र नवाब हुए. मुर्शिदाबाद मुग़ल एवं ब्रिटिश शक्तियों के वीच युद्ध स्थल बना. पलाशी के युद्ध में सिराज़ुद्दौला के सेनापति मीर जाफर की गद्दारी के कारन उन्हें ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी के क्लाइव लोयेड के हाथों पराजित होना पड़ा. यहीं से भारत में ब्रिटिश शासन की नींव पड़ी.

अंग्रेजों ने अपनी राजधानी मुर्शिदाबाद से बदल कर कलकत्ते को बना लिया लेकिन मुर्शिदाबाद की गरिमा फिर भी बनी रही. मुर्शिदाबाद अपनी कलाप्रियता के लिए जाना जाता रहा.

मुर्शिदाबाद के अजीमगंज एवं जिआगंज में रहने वाले जैन धर्मावालम्वी ओसवालों ने यहाँ की संस्कृति में रंग भरने में अपना विशिष्ट योगदान दिया. यहाँ के जैन धर्मावलाम्वी शहरवाली के नाम से प्रसिद्द हुए.यहाँ की कला, संस्कृति, स्थापत्य आदि की उन्नति में शहरवाली समाज का योगदान कल्पनातीत है.

शहरवाली समाज के लोग उच्च शिक्षित, राईस व धनवान होने के साथ ही धर्मात्मा भी थे. अनेकों जिन मंदिर एवं दादाबाड़ी उनकी धर्मं परायणता का उदहारण है. शहरवाली समाज द्वारा स्थापित अनेक विद्यालय, महाविद्यालय जहाँ उनकी शिक्षा एवं ज्ञान के प्रति रूचि दर्शाती है वहीँ उन लोगों के द्वारा स्थापित चिकित्सालय उनकी परोपकारिता को.

यहाँ के जैन मंदिर एवं कोठियां शहरवाली समाज के अतीत गौरव की याद दिलाती है. यह एक धर्मं प्राण समाज है एवं अनेक दीक्षाएं इस बात कीगवाह है. अजीमगंज व जियागंज से अनेक साधू - साध्वियां भी हुई हैं.
शहरवाली पोषाक की अपनी अलग विशेषता है. अजीमगंज शहरवाली साथ का खानाभी अपनी विशिष्टताओं से भरपूर है. इनकी विविधता भी निराली है. शहरवाली समाज के रीती रिवाजों में भी यहं की माती की सुगंध है.

Navpad Mandal Pujan will be organized at Sri Neminath Swami temple tomorrow. Navpad Mandal Pujan is organized every year on the last day of Navpad Oli in Azimganj since many many years.

This is a gorgeous program organized with full enthusiasm. Shaharwali people of Azimganj worship Navpad conducting Navpad Oli with full devotion and enthusiasm since centuries. Navpad Mandal Pujan is so famous in Azimganj that people living outside Azimganj also come and join this puja.

Sri Sangh of Azimganj will organize this Puja tomorrow, October 22, 2010.

Jyoti Kothari is elected Secretary Jaipur Khartargachchh Sangh

I, Jyoti Kothari, have been elected as Secretary, Sri Jain Shwetambar Khartar Gachchh Sangh, Jaipur. Several Jain Temples, Dadabadi (Including Malpura), student's hostel and Dharmshala are managed by the Jaipur Sangh.

Election of Jaipur Sangh was held on July 4. 2010 and I have been elected as a member of executive committee. The said executive committee has elected me as Secretary of the Sangh.

Azimganj and Jiaganj are recognized as prominent places of Jain community as well as Khartar Gachchh. Jaipur also holds up in the map of Khartar Gachchh Sangh.

I have born and brought up as Shaharwali and now acting as secretary of Jaipur Khartar Gachchh Sangh. I believe that this combination will help both the Sangh.

Famous Shaharwali people and family: Puranchand Shamsukha

Shamsukha family is one of the most famous Shaharwali family from Azimganj. They were migrated from Bikaner, Rajasthan to Azimganj. Puranchand Shamsukha (1882-1967), S/O Mehtabchand and grand son of Sangram Singh was a renowned scholar of Jainism. He had been in service to Maharaj Bahadur Singh Dugar at his early age and later on he served Nahata family of Jiaganj.

Renowned Bengali story writer Dakshinaranjan Mitra Mazumdar (Thakurmar Jhuli fame) was his close friend. Puran Chand Shamsukha wrote several books on Jainism in Bengali language such as "Jaino Dharmer Parichay", "Jain Tirthankar Mahavira", "Jaino Darshaner Ruprekha" etc. He also translated Jain Agam "Uttaradhyana Sutra" which was published by Calcutta University.

Some of his articles were published in 'Asia' magazine, Bangkok.

Renowned linguist and Vice Chancelor of Calcutta university, Dr. Suniti Chatterjee, Dr. Kalidas Nag and Bijoy Singh Nahar were among the editors of "Puranchand Shamsukha abinandan Grantha".

Rishabhchand Shamsukha (1900-1970), his eldest son was also a scholar and meditator. He established "Indian silk house" a famous Saree shop at college street in 1924 for livelihood of his family and left for "Sri Aurobindo ashram", Pondichery at the age of only 31. He lived their rest of his life.

He has written few books about Rishi Aurobindo and his doctrine.

3. Sri Aurobindo: His life unique.

The last one was written inspired by the Mother herself.

Parichand Kothari and Umirchand Kothari were his close friends who also followed path of Sri Aurobindo inspired by him.

Sumatichand Shamsukha, another son of Puranchand Shamsukha was a social server. He adorned the seat of secretary Murshidabad Sangh and Jain Bhawan, Kolkata.

New idol of Sri Seemandhar Swami at Azimganj

There is Sri Seemandhar Swami temple at the first floor of Sri Neminath Ji Mandir at Azimganj, Murshidabad. The temple had a Choumukh (Four idols in four sides) of Seemandhar Swami idols. Unfortunately, one of the idols were broken (Khandit). It was broken long back.

However, it has not been reinstalled. Acharya Padmasagar Suri inspired Azimganj Sri Sangh to renovate Sri Neminath Swami temple during his Chaturmas at Azimganj and the Sangh renovated the temple as per his will. Even he has overlooked this issue despite complete renovation of the temple.

I have repeatedly raised this issue of Khandit Pratima at several places and finally Sunil Choraria, secretary, Azimganj Sri Sangh, has agreed to reinstall the idol during my visit to Azimganj last Chaturmas. He ordered for an idol matching the rest of the three.

A beautiful statue of white marble is made under the supervision of Vidhikarak Yashwant Golechha according to the photograph and size sent to me by Sunil Choraria. The idol has been handed over to Sunil Choraria on April 8, 2010 during his visit to Jaipur along with Ajit Lodha, Suresh Jhabak and Baid.

Sunil Choraria has assured me that the idol will be installed at the place of broken one after Anjanshalaka.

Seemandhar Swami is a Viharman Tirthankar in Purva Mahavideha Kshetra. He is the most worshiped nowadays here among all twenty Viharman Tirthankar. Chaityavandana of Sri Seemandhar Swami is included in The Rai (Morning) Pratikramana. This shows his importance. He is alive and performing his Vihar in Mahavideha Kshetra and obliging people with his sermons in Samavsarana.

Azimganj Jiaganj: The then no fishing zone

Azimganj and Jiaganj were main Jain districts during 19th century and first half of twentieth century. Jain community of Azimganj and Jiaganj (Baluchar) was not only powerful but also very religious minded. Large numbers of huge Jain temples speak the story itself.

It is not required to mention that this religious community was totally vegetarian while following Jainism. More over, fishing was banned in the River Bhagirathi (Ganga) in the area of Jain district.

There was a famous story about fishing in this zone. There was a non-Jain Rai Bahadur in Jiaganj. He took as a challenge to catch a fish in this zone. He arranged to catch fish and caught some. Maharaj Bahadur Singh Dugar took it seriously and lodged a case against him. He fought the case in several courts and finally won. He obtained an order from Privy Council (London) against fishing in this zone. Privy council was the apex court in British India.

It is told that he spent Rs. 6.25 lakh to win this case! Just imagine the value of money at that time! He did not care for money and spent it for his non violent religion, Jainism and vegetarianism.

Holi festival in Murshidabad

Holi of Murshidabad Shaharwali society was an important and renowned event. Shaharwali society used to play Holi with great enthusiasm in both Azimganj and Jiaganj.

Holi, the festival of color had been enjoyed for a week in Murshidabad. It had been starting on the day of Falguna Shukla Ashtami (Eighth day of bright half in Indian lunar calendar) ending on Chaitra Krishna Pratipada (Ekam, first day of dark half in Indian lunar calendar).

Holi was a part of "Raisi" of Shaharwali society. They used Safron, rose water, Tesu (Herbal color) and other beautiful colors and Abir (Gulal) to play Holi. Pichkari (Piston like instrument to play Holi with liquid color). Pua and Pakodi were the special dishes along with Thandai (a soft drink). large number of people used to have some "Bhang" to enjoy.

"Holi ki sang" and "Holi ka Bhandu" were popular humor creating events of Murshidabad Shaharwali community. People had been enjoying "Holi ki barat" with humor and enjoyment. "Holi ki sail" or feast was also very popular those days.

Nirmal Kumar Singh Nowlakha, a famous Zemindar of Azimganj was very fond of Holi. many stories about him is famous about Holi.

Pranab Mukherjee has given major benefits to Murshidabad in Indian budget 2010

Pranab Mukherjee, Finance Minister of India has given two major projects to Murshidabad district in the Union budget 2010.

One is flood control project for Bhagirathi Padma river which will significantly benefit Murshidabad district along with Nadia.

There is a proposed master plan for Kandi region of Murshidabadf district. Both this projects proposed in Central budget will positively affect economy of Murshidabad.

It is to be noted that Pranab Mukherjee, Finance Minister of India is MP from Jangipur, Murshidabad. Azimganj comes in Jangipur Parliamentary constituency.

यह चुनाव १० जनवरी को जैन भवन में संपन्न हुआ. जैन समाज के लगभग ११०० लोगों से इस मतदान में भाग लिया.शहरवाली समाज के कुल चार लोगों ने इस निर्वाचन में भाग लिया था जिनमे से दो चुने गए.

श्री शांतिनाथ स्वामी पंचायती मंदिर, तुलापट्टी, कोलकाता में परंपरागत रूप से दो सदस्य शहरवाली समाज से, दो सदस्य जौहरी साथ से एवं तीन सदस्य कोलकाता मारवाड़ी साथ से चुने जाते हैं. इस वार भी उसी के अनुरूप चुने गए हैं.

जैन श्वेताम्बर मूर्तिपूजक समुदाय के खरतर गच्छ परम्परा में, श्री सुख सागर सूरी के समुदाय में पूज्य श्री हरी सागर सूरी आचार्य बने. उन्हें अजीमगंज में महोत्सव पूर्वक आचार्य पद प्रदान किया गया. उस समय अजीमगंज श्री नेमी नाथ स्वामी के मंदिर में अस्टान्हिका (अट्ठाई) महोत्सव का आयोजन किया गया. उस अवसर पर मंदिर की शोभा का वर्णन करते हुए श्री जगन्नाथ पटावरी ने एक स्तवन लिखा था. यह स्तवन स्तवनावली एवं प्रभु भजनावली में भी मुद्रित है. यह भजन एक ऐतिहासिक दस्तावेज़ भी है.

Shilanyas (Shila Sthapna) at Azimganj Dadabadi

Azimganj Sri Sangh organize programm of Shilanyas (Shila Sthapna) at Azimganj Dadabadi on December 3, 2009. Shila Sthapna (Laying foundation stone) ceremony will be conducted in the auspices of Sadhwi Shashiprabha Shri ji.

Sona Chand Baid of Azimganj will laid the main foundation stone in the center. There will be eight more foundation stones to be laid in four sides and four angles.

Anil Choraria, Uttam Kumar Golechha, Sanjeev Nakhat, Bhupal Chand Rekhawat, Kishor Kumar Nowlakha, Nirmal Chand Choradia, Shashi Nowlakha and Dhanpat Singh Dugar families will laid these eight foundation stones. They are doing these in memory of their forefathers.

Bhumi Pujan and Khanan Muhurt of Dadabadi is done at Azimganj on Cctober 4 2009 morning 6 o' clock. Azimganj Shree Sangh has also organized Navpad Mandal Pujan on the same day at 10 o' clock.
Nakoda Bhairav Mahapujan was organized a day before at Sri Neminath Temple. Dadaguru Pujan and Ayambil tapa in group was also organized on october 4.

Satrah Bhedi Puja was organized on October 5 to celebrate Siddhi tap of Sadhwi Ji. Puja was followed by Sadharmi Vatsalya.

Missing Idol

Azimganj Sri Neminath temple is two storey. There is Seemandhar Swami Gambhara in the first floor. An idol of the group of four is missing since many years. Perhaps it became khandit long back and removed. There is a need of installation of the missing idol.

I have repeatedly requested to install one since long times.

I am thankful to Mr. Sunil Churoria, secretary, Azimganj Sri Sangh, who has sent me thiese pictures today.

He has told me to order for this idol (11 inches) to be built. I will do it as soon as possible.

It is to be remebered that Acharya Padmasagar Suri was instrumental to huge unnecessary rennovations in Neminath temple. He urged at that time that there are many faults in its construction and Sangh reconstructed the temple at many places.

However, he could not see this and another Khandit Pratima in Sri Navpad Ji (Crystal). Khandit idol of Navpad ji was replaced in auspiecies of Pujya Sadhwi Hempragyan Sri ji during her Chaturmas in Azimganj.

Now the Sangh will install this very idol of Seemandhar Swami. Thanks again to Mr. Sunil Churoria.

Is it Ok to demolish and reconstruct Dadabadi in Azimganj?

Azimganj Jiaganj Murshidabad blog conducted an opinion poll about: "Is it Ok to demolish and reconstruct Dadabadi in Azimganj?" to know the view of Shaharwali prople in general. The poll was open to all and was in ballot.

The poll was open for seven days and was closed yesterday.

Brief summary of the poll as follows:

Total vote caste: 21
Yes: 6
No: 14
No opinion: 1

This shows general mood of Shaharwali people. Less than 30 percent people casted their vote in favor of demolition and reconstruction of Azimganj Rambag Dadabadi whereas 67 percent were against it.

It is advisable for the offfice bearers of Azimganj Sri Sangh to go with public opinion.

Navpad Oli begins from September 26

Navpad Oli, a Jain festival will be starting from September 26 this year 2009. The Navapad is also referred as Siddhachakra. Jain community worship Navapad by performing nine Ayambil in nine days between Shukla Saptami and Purnima of lunar month Ashwina. The Navpad Oli is also observed in Chaitra.

Azimganj people has been observing Navapd Oli since long time with great enthusiasm and devotion. Azimganj Jain Sangh also performs Siddhacakra Mahapujan that is also refereed as Navpad Mandal Pujan every year at Sri Neminath Swami Jain Temple.

Mandal ji Puja will be performed on October 4 this year 2009.

Famous persons and families in Murshidabad part 6: Bothra Family

Bothra family became dominant in religious and cultural activities among Shaharwali after decline of zemindari in 1954. Many of the prominent families of Murshidabad suffered huge set back after 1954. The Bothra family of Azimganj came to replace the vaccuam.

Late Prasan Chand Bothra established a business house for trading jute in Kolkata. Shree Parichand, Srichand and Gambhirchand Bothra were three able sons of him. They have flourished business after him and raised income many folds.

They became the new Rais of Azimganj residing at Parsi Bagan lane and Dover road in Kolkata. They have their Mukams in Jiaganj and other places. They purchased A.M. Mair and company that became the most successful jute brokerage farm. All the brothers were religious and social. Most of the charitable work in Murshidabad were supported by the family during last half of twentieth century. The brothers established Pawan Kumari Jnyan Mandir, a Jain pathshala at Azimganj in the name of their mother. Where Shree Parichand and Shrichand Bothra were more involved in socio-religious activities Shree Gambhirchand Bothra devoted his life in serving the patients. He was a daily visitor of Marwadi relief society, hospital at Chitpur.

Reconstruction of Azimganj Dadabadi at Rambag

There are hue and cry regarding dismental and reconstruction of Rambagh Dadabadi and some other related issues among Shaharwali society nowadays .

I have got several phone calls from Kolkata and Azimganj during these days. There are also some comments made by Shaharwali people anonymously in the blogposts.

I have repeatedly discussed the matters with Pujya Sadhwi Shree Shashiprabha Shreeji Maharaj and Shree Sunil Churoria, Secretary, Azimganj Shreesangh alongwith some other experienced, religious and socially active persons of Azimganj. I have also consulted some office bearers of Murshidabad Sangh, Kolkata and trustees of Azimganj Shreesangh. Now I am able to draw some conclusions about the matter.

1. It is suggestable to keep the pond in front of Dadabadi at its present position.

2. Dadabadi is already dismentalled and there is no way to rstore it as it is. Hence it is suggestable to
reconstruct it maintaining its old look. Old architecture of eastern India should be maintained and preserved.

3. It is also in the interest of everyone to rectify serious mistakes (That occured during reconstruction and Pratistha by Acharya Padmasagar Suri) in Sri Neminath Jain temple, Azimganj. Sri Sunil Churoria has assured me of the same in a telecon.

4. Pujya Maharaj Saheb informed me that Shilanyas of Dadabadi is postponed and it will not be done on the day of Navapad Mandal Ji Pujan. She has also informed me that she had advised the Sangh to reconstruct Dadabadi with mimimum cost.

I appreciate both the decissions.

5. It is suggestable not to involve the same Vidhikarak as "Margadarshak" in reconstruction of Dadabadi who had commited serious mistakes during earlier Pratistha in Sri Neminath Swami temple.

6. It also suggestable that the Sangh should meet and come into an unanimous decission. A plan, design and budget should be passed in that meeting in Margadarshan of Pujya Sadhwiji Shree Shashiprabha Shreeji. She has assured me of guiding the Sangh in this matter.

7. It is in the best interest of Azimganj Shreesangh and Shaharwali society at large to avoid all controversies and leg pulling (if any). We all are united for the cause of betterment of shaharwali society and to bring its past glory. May Arihant Paramatma bless us and dadagurudeva help us.

कुछ वर्षों पूर्व अजीमगंज श्री नेमिनाथ जी के मन्दिर में भी जबरदस्त तोड़फोड़ कर नया निर्माण कराया गया था। उस काम में गंभीर भूलें हुई एवं मन्दिर की प्राचीनता एवं भव्यता भी नष्ट हुई। श्री नेमिनाथ जी के मन्दिर में कुछ प्रतिमाएँ खंडित थी जैसे ऊपर दो तल्ले में श्री सीमंधर स्वामी की प्रतिमा एवं निचे नवपद जी की स्फटिक रत्न की प्रतिमा। उन खंडित प्रतिमाओं के स्थान पर कोई नई प्रतिमा प्रतिष्ठित करना आवश्यक था परन्तु उस ओर ध्यान नही दिया गया। बाद में पूज्या साध्वी हेम प्रज्ञा श्री जी के सान्निध्य में नवपद जी की खंडित प्रतिमा को पुनः स्थापित किया गया। संघ के आदेश से वह प्रतिमा मैंने जयपुर से बनवा कर भिजवाई थी। परन्तु श्री सीमंधर स्वामी की प्रतिमा आज तक तक प्रतिष्ठित नही हुई है।

श्री नेमिनाथ स्वामी के मन्दिर की पुनः प्रतिष्ठा में इस के अलावा और भी गंभीर भूलें हुई जिनका निराकरण आज तक नही हुआ है। श्री वासुपूज्य स्वामी के गम्भारे में श्री रिषभ देव स्वामी के गणधर पुंडरिक स्वामी की एक प्रतिमा थी। उस प्रतिमा को श्री नेमिनाथ स्वामी के मुलगाभारे में प्रतिष्ठित किया गया। उसके बाद तीर्थंकरों की प्रतिमा को उसके निचे विराजमान किया गया। तीर्थंकर प्रतिमा को गणधर प्रतिमा के निचे विराजमान करना क्या गंभीर चूक नहीं है? क्या विधि कारक को इस ओर ध्यान नही देना चाहिए था? ज्ञातव्य है की ये काम एक प्रसिद्ध आचार्य के द्वारा विश्व विख्यात विधि कारक के द्वारा कराया गया था। उस से भी बड़ी बात ये है की प्राचीन प्रतिष्ठा में भूल बता कर ये सारे काम किए गए थे।
इसके अलावा प्रतिमाओं को आमने सामने विराजमान करवाने से एक प्रतिमा की पूजा करने पर दूसरी प्रतिमाओं की तरफ़ पीठ होता है। पहले प्रतिमाएँ इस प्रकार से विराजमान थी की एक की पूजा करने पर दुसरे की तरफ़ पीठ नही होती थी। साथ ही गम्भारों की खिड़किओं को बंद करने से गर्मी के कारण बहुत पसीना आता है एवं पूजा करने में विघ्न आता है। इन खामिओं की तरफ़ मैंने स्वयं ने बार बार ध्यान आकर्षित करवाया परन्तु इस दिशा में कुछ भी नही हुआ।
इतनी गंभीर भूल करने वाले विधि कारक को पुनः आमंत्रित करना एवं उनसे फिर से दूसरा बड़ा काम करवाने के पीछे क्या कारण हो सकता है?
जागरुक समाज को इस ओर अवश्य ध्यान देना चाहिए।

अजीमगंज प्राचीन मंदिरों का केन्द्र है एवं इस प्रकार से उनकी प्राचीनता को नष्ट करना क्या उचित है ?

सुज्ञ जानो से निवेदन है की इस बात पर गंभीरता से विचार कर ठोस कदम उठायें।
इस संवंध में मैंने मेरे अजीमगंज प्रवास (१ व २ सितम्बर २००९) के दौरान मेरे बचपन के मित्र एवं अजीमगंज संघ के सचिव श्री सुनील चोरडिया से भी आग्रह किया है एवं पूज्या साध्वी जी महाराज से भी निवेदन किया है।

अजीमगंज दादाबाडी का खात मुहूर्त व शिलान्यास दिनांक ४ अक्तूबर २००९ को होने जा रहा है। अजीमगंज की प्राचीन दादाबाडी को पुरी तरह जमिन्दोज़ कर नए सिरे से निर्माण कराये जाने की योजना है।
इस विषय में अजीमगंज शहरवाली समाज में काफी विवाद है जिसके वारे में मैंने पिछले लेख में भी लिखा था। उसके बाद से मेंरे पास लगातार फ़ोन आ रहे हैं एवं लोग अपने अपने मत व्यक्त कर रहे हैं।

जैन धर्म के अनुसार चातुर्मास में किसी भी प्रकार के निर्माण कार्य का प्रायः निषेध किया जाता है। क्योंकि इस दौरान जीवोत्पत्ति अधिक होती है। लेकिन इस दादाबाडी को चातुर्मास के दौरान ही तोड़ने का एवं इसके बाद खात मुहूर्त व शिलान्यास का कार्यक्रम रखा गया है। काफी लोग इस बात से नाराज हैं एवं इसका विरोध कर रहे हैं। इसके अलावा शिलान्यास का मुहूर्त आश्विन शुक्ला पूर्णिमा को रखा गया है। यह दिन नवपद ओली का आखरी दिन है एवं इस दिन अजीमगंज में नवपद मंडल की पूजा वर्षों से होती आ रही है। मंडल जी की पूजा का अजीमगंज जिआगंज के शहरवाली समाज में बहुत महत्व है।

एक ही दिन में दो महत्व पूर्ण कार्यक्रम होने से लोग असमंजस में है।

कुछ लोग इस बात पर भी रोष जाहिर कर रहे हैं की दादाबाडी में भैरव जी के उत्थापन जैसा अत्यन्त महत्वपूर्ण कार्यक्रम बिना किसी विधिकारक के संपन्न करवाया गया है। रामबाग के भैरव जी की पुराने समय से बहुत अधिक मान्यता रही है। मन्दिर परिशर में स्थापित भैरव जी के उत्थापन के समय अनेकों विघ्न पुराने समय में भी आये थे एवं समर्थ पुरुषों के द्वारा ही उस विघ्न का निवारण हो पाया था। ज्ञातव्य है की भैरव जी के उत्थापन से प्रायः विधिकारक गण भी डरते हैं और इस काम को करने में हिचकिचाते हैं। ऐसी स्थिति में किसी अनजान व्यक्ति से यह काम करवाना उस व्यक्ति को खतरे में डालने जैसा हो सकता है।

इतने बड़े निर्माण कार्य को करवाने से पहले उसका नक्शा बनवाना एवं संघ की सभा में उसे पारित करवाना आवश्यक था। साथ ही उसका बजट बनवाना भी आवश्यक था। बातचीत में निर्माण की लागत कभी ७० लाख तो कभी १ से डेढ़ करोड़ बताई जाती है परन्तु वास्तविकता क्या है पता नहीं। लोगों का कहना है की इन गंभीर अनियमितताओं के होते हुए दादाबाडी को जमिन्दोज़ करवाना कतई उचित नही है।

मेरा अजीमगंज समाज के ट्रस्टी गणों से निवेदन है की लोगों की भावनाओं को ध्यान में रखते हुए इस पुरे कार्यक्रम पर नए सिरे से विचार कर उचित निर्णय लें।

उत्थापन कार्यक्रम में उपस्थित जनसमूह

अजीमगंज रामबाग दादाबाडी में भैरव जी के उत्थापन का कार्यक्रम दिनांक २ सितम्बर २००९, वुधवार को पूज्या साध्वी श्री शशिप्रभा श्री जी महाराज की निश्रा में सम्पन्न हुआ। इसके साथ ही प्राचीन दादाबाडी को तोड़ने काम भी शुरू हुआ। ज्ञातव्य है की इस अति प्राचीन दादाबाडी को पुरी तरह जमींदोज कर (सिर्फ़ मूल वेदी को छोड़ कर) नए सिरे से निर्माण कराया जायेगा। यह कार्यक्रम काफी बड़ी लागत से सम्पन्न होगा। इस काम को करवाने के लिए अजीमगंज श्री संघ के सचिव श्री सुनील चोरडिया काफी लगन के साथ परिश्रम कर रहे हैं।

इस दादाबाडी में तीन दादागुरुओं के साथ ही पंचम काल के अंत में होने वाले अन्तिम युगप्रधान आचार्य श्री दुप्पह सूरी के भी चरण हैं। ये चारों नयनाभिराम चरण स्फटिक रत्न से बने हुए हैं।

इस काम के संवंध में शहरवाली समाज में एक मत नहीं है। जहाँ कुछ लोग यह काम करवाना चाहते हैं वहीँ बड़ी संख्या में लोग इस के विरोध में भी हैं। विरोधी लोगों का मत है की दादाबाडी का सामान्य रूप से जीर्णोद्धार करवाना ही काफी है। अब अजीमगंज में बहुत कम लोग रहते हैं। दादाबाडी शहर से दूर होने के कारण बहुत कम लोग ही वहां पहुचते हैं। ऐसी स्थिति में इस जगह पर इतना पैसा लगाने का औचित्य नहीं है। उनका मानना है की इस पैसे का बेहतर उपयोग हो सकता है।

रामबाग परिसर में दो तालाव भी है। अभी कुछ दिन पूर्व किसी वास्तुकार ने सलाह दी की इन्हे बंद करवा दिया जाए। इस बात को ले कर भी गहरे मत भेद है। कुछ लोग इस सलाह पर अमल करना चाहते हैं लेकिन कुछ लोगों का मानना है की इसमे बहुत अधिक जीव हिंसा होगी जो की जैन सिद्धांत के ख़िलाफ़ है। साथ ही तालाव बंद करवाना राज्य के कानून के भी ख़िलाफ़ है। लोगों का यह भी कहना है की जिस समय यह तालाव बना था तब अजीमगंज बहुत समृद्ध था तो फिर इसमें वास्तु दोष कैसे हो सकता है?

Tirthankar Neminath and Vasudeva Krishna were cousin brothers according to Jain stories. We find the story in Kalpasutra Teeka that is preached on the ocasion of Paryushan.

A play " Neminath and Krishna" will be staged at Azimganj Kothi on 15 August, Independence day on the auspices of Sadhwi Shashiprabha Shree Ji Maharaj and her disciples.

Singhi family of Azimganj is also a renowned Shaharwali family. Bahadur Singh Singhi and Dalchand Singhi were the pioneers of the family. They established their business and business system well. They have found their fortune in collieries. They had lion's share in coal production of Bengal before nationalization of collieries.

Singhi family was fond of Gemstones, especially flat diamonds and emeralds. They were instrumental in making wonderful "Aangi" of sri Dharmanath Swami in Tulapatti Jain Temple, Kolkata. This Kundan Jadau "Aangi" is studded with hundreds of big size flawless flat diamonds.

The Singhi family had built two high schools, one in Lalbagh and another in Jiaganj, both in Murshidabad district. Their residential house Singhi Sadan in Azimganj is now converted to Azimganj Kothi. Rajendra Singh Singhi of this family was the first one in Shaharwali society to marry a Gujrati Gir l.

However, their main contribution to Jain society is publications of "Singhi Granthamala". This is a series of Jain texts published first time in printed form. This series is an asset to Jain academic world. Prakrit Bharati, Jaipur is set to re-publish the same.

1. Rajendra Singh Singhi married to Sushila D/o Kasturbhai of Ahmedabad, Gujrat. Kasturbhai was the Chairman of Lalbhai Kasturbhai group. The family had the honor of being heridatiry President of Anandji Kalyanji Pedhi, representing a large group of Shwetambar Jain Murtipoojak community.

3. Charitra Kumar Singh Nowlakha was married in renowned Rampuria family of Bikaner, Rajasthan. Haweli of Rampuria's in Bikaner is a tourist place. Kamal Singh rampuria of the family is the present President of Sammet Shikhar Tirth.

4. Darshan Kumar Nowlakha was married in famous Shah family and his brother Gyan Kumar Nowlakha in Seth Ratanlal Phophalia family. Ratanlal Phophalia was a renowned Jeweler and Mentor of Rajroop Tank, Dean of Jaipur gem dealers.

5. Dev Kumar Singhi was married in famous Baid family of "Gulab Niwas" in Jaipur.

Mahasingh Meghraj Kothari was one of the most famous Shaharwali merchant from Azimganj. They have expanded their business in Assam. Their business houses were called "Badgola" that means big godown in local language. Both Mahasingh and Meghraj Kothari had been awarded with the title Rai Bahadur.

The family built Neminath temple that is now known as Panchayati Mandir and Badi poshal in Azimganj. The most important aspect of building the temple was that none of their family members put their name in the temple. They remain anonymous though spending huge amount of money in building the temple.

The family left Azimganj and most of the family members are now living in Vidyasagar street, Maniktalla, Kolkata.

The family has got some very famous personality. Dilip Singh Kothari of the family had represented Indian national team in Football. Achal Singh Kothari of the family was the first one to be a medical Doctor from Shaharwali society. Jyoti Kothari remained as President of Murshidabad Sangh for very long time.

Manoj Kothari won the world championship title of Billiard in recent past.

Nirmal Singh Nowlakha was one of the most famous "Rais" of Azimganj. Shaharwali society was known for its "Raisi" and there were several "Rais" families in both Azimganj and Jiaganj. However, Nirmal Kumar Singh Nowlakha popularly known as "Nowlakha ji" was the talk of the town. He was married to the daughter of Maharaj Bahadur Singh Dugar, another Rais of Jiaganj.

He was renowned for organizing "Holi", the Indian festival of colors. Nowlakha Rose garden in Azimganj was the best in whole Murshidabad district. He had also been organizing Football tournaments.

Besides his Raisi he founded hospital in Azimganj. This is the only hospital in Azimganj till date (Now Government runs that).

Parent of present Acharya Padmasagar ji was working under him.

Shashi Nowlakha, his Grandson (S/o Charitra Kumar Singh) is now very active in social field. He is trustee of several Teerthas and other social and Charitable institutes.
