Nahar Family:

Nahar family was a Zemindar family of Azimganj. The family has contributed a lot to the society, religion, academics and culture. They built Shri Sumatinath Temple in Azimganj. Nahar family also founded Kumar Singh Hall with a temple, community hall, library and museum in Kolkata near their residence at Indian mirror street. Rai Bahadoor Sri Manilal Nahar and one more person (I can not remember name) of this family had been featured in "Glimpses of Bengal", published in 1905.

Sri Puran Chand Nahar of this family was a great scholar. He is one of the academicians in India who laid the foundation to modern historical and archaeological research about Jainism. His collection is donated to Kolkata university and it is preserved there.

His brother Kesri Chand Nahar was a great patron of Indian classical music. He collected and published "Stavanavali" almost a century back. This is a great collection of Jain Bhajans with name of "Raag" and "Taal" printed with every Bhajan (Jain devotional song).

Bijoy Singh Nahar of this family entered into politics. He reached to the status of Home Minister and deputy Chief minister of West Bengal. He had been in the ministry of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy and Siddhartha Shankar Roy. Later on, he left Congress party with babu Jagjivan Ram to form Congress for democracy in 1977. When Congress for democracy was merged into Janata party, he became general secretary of Janata Party. He fought and won parliamentary election in 1977 from Kolkata.
He was a revolutionary Jain and edited and published "Tarun Jain", a monthly magazine for young Jains. He also adorned the post of Chairman, Bihar religious trust board, Government of Bihar.

Deep Singh Nahar of this family was a great photographer and had been worked as President, Bengal photographers association.

Ajit Singh Nahar of this family was a famous homoeopath and married to Smt. Kanak Sundari of famous Rai Badridas Bahadoor Mookim family. His sons Soumendra Nahar, Pradip Nahar and Bablu Nahar studied in Moscow. Soumendra Nahar and Pradip Nahar were awarded with Gorbachev award, highest honor for scientists in former USSR. Soumen and Bablu are in Russia and Pradip is serving as a research scientist in CSIR, Delhi.

Update: Mr. Ranjan Nahar, brother of Soumen has informed me that Soumen has returned fron Russia and is now living in Kolkata.

प्रथम पुण्य तिथि: श्रीमती कुसुम कुमारी कोठारी

स्वर्गीया श्रीमती कुसुम कुमारी कोठारी , धर्मपत्नी, स्वर्गीय श्री धीरेन्द्र पत जी कोठारी की प्रथम पुण्य तिथि आज जयपुर में मनाई गई। श्रीमती कुसुम कुमारी कोठारी का स्वर्गवास गत वर्ष आज ही के दिन ३१ जुलाई २००८ को ह्रदय रोग से जयपुर में हुआ था। उस समय आप ७९ वर्ष की थीं।
श्रीमती कुसुम कुमारी का जन्म कोलकाता के स्वनाम धन्य राय बद्रीदास बहादूर मुकीम परिवार में इस्वी सन १९३० में हुआ था।
कोल्कता के प्रसिद्ध पारसनाथ मन्दिर के निर्माता एवं वाइस रोय के जौहरी राय बद्रीदास बहादुर के ज्येष्ठ पुत्र श्री राय कुमार सिंह आप के दादा व श्री फ़तेह कुमार सिंह मुकीम आप के पिता थे। आप का ननिहाल रिंगनोद, मालवा के प्रसिद्ध रावले में था। आप की माँ का नाम श्रीमती सज्जन कुमारी था।

बचपन से ही आप में परिवार के अनुरूप धार्मिक संस्कार थे। उस काल में भी आपने अंग्रेजी एवं संगीत की शिक्षा प्राप्त की थी। आप वीणा व हारमोनियम बजाया करती थीं।
आप का विवाह अजीमगंज के पानाचंद नानकचंद कोठारी परिवार में श्री कमलापत कोठारी के पौत्र व श्री चंद्रपत कोठारी के कनिष्ठ पुत्र श्री धीरेन्द्र पत कोठारी से सन १९४६ में संपन्न हुआ। आपके प्रमिला, उर्मिला, निर्मला, शीला व सुजाता नाम की पाँच पुत्रियाँ व ज्योति नाम का एक पुत्र हुआ जिनमे निर्मला का देहांत बचपन में ही हो गया था। अभी आपकी चार पुत्रियाँ व एक पुत्र मौजूद हैं। आपकी दौहित्री (नतनी) व शीला लोढा की पुत्री ने साध्वी श्री शशिप्रभा श्री जी के पास (१९९८) अल्पायु में दीक्षा ग्रहण की थी। वे आज साध्वी श्री श्रद्धान्विता श्री जी के नाम से जानी जाती हैं। साध्वी श्री श्रद्धान्विता श्री, शीला व सुजाता तीनो ने ही इस वर्ष वर्षी तप का परना पलिताना में किया।
९ सितम्बर १९७९ को श्री धीरेन्द्र पत कोठारी के अल्पायु में देहावसान के बाद पुरे परिवार की जिम्मेदारी आप पर आ गई जिसे उन्होंने बखूबी निभायी । साथ ही अपना जीवन पुरी तरह से धर्म ध्यान में समर्पित कर दिया। आप प्रतिदिन जिन पूजा के अलावा चार- पाँच सामायिक किया करती थीं। दृढ़ता पूर्वक एक आसन में बैठ कर जप करना आप को बहुत प्रिय था। आपने अपने जीवन में पालिताना, सम्मेत शिखर, आबू, गिरनार, पावापुरी, राजगृह, कुण्डलपुर, चम्पापुर, नाकोडा, नागेश्वर, मांडव गढ़, अजमेर, मालपुरा, महरोली आदि सैंकडों तीर्थों की यात्राएं कर पुण्य उपार्जित किया। अजीमगंज में प्रसिद्ध नवपद ओली की आराधना आप जीवन पर्यंत करती रहीं। इसके अलावा आपने वीस स्थानक, मौन ग्यारस, ज्ञान पंचमी आदि अन्य अनेक तपस्चर्यायें भी की। आपने शत्रुंजय तीर्थ की निन्याणु यात्रा भी की।
आज हमारी माँ हमारे बीच में नहीं हैं परन्तु उनकी यादें व उनके दिए हुए धार्मिक संस्कार आज भी हमारा मार्ग दर्शन करती है। हम उनके सभी बच्चे यही प्रार्थना करते हैं की वे जहाँ हैं वहीँ से हमें आशीर्वाद प्रदान करती रहें।

Nice to hear from you. Thank you for the congratulatory message and for making a post on your blog about my graduation.

I studied learning and memory within the eye movement control system in humans. Basically, I looked at how people make accurate eye movements under different conditions and how people remember locations in space. I also studied which brain areas are involved while this is happening by using fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) technology.
I continue to do research in this area, but am also looking for jobs outside of academia right now.

सिलामी व व्याह भाग 2

रीति रिवाज़: सिलामी और व्याह भाग १  से आगे :

उस समय शादी कम उमर में ही हो जाती थी लेकिन लड़की पियर में ही रहती थी। थोडी बड़ी होने के बाद (मुख्यतः मासिक धर्मं होने के बाद) लड़की को बिदा किया जाता था एवं उसके बाद ही लड़की ससुराल जाती थी। पीहर से बिदा होने की यह रश्म सावन के महीने में ही होती थी इसलिए इसे सावन मोकलाई कहते थे। मोकलाई का अर्थ मारवाडी भाषा में भेजना होता है।

अजीमगंज के बड़े मन्दिर में एक खाता रखा जाता था जिसे केसरिया व्रत का खाता कहते थे। इस खाते में शादी से संवंधित सभी बातें दर्ज की जाती थी। इसमें वर वधु के नाम, माता-पिता, पता आदि सभी बातें दर्ज होती थी। शादी के अवसर पर लड़के वालों से एक निश्चित शुल्क ले कर ही इस खाते में नाम दर्ज किया जाता था। उस राशि में मन्दिर, गुरूजी (यती जी), मन्दिर के पुजारी अदि सभी का हिस्सा होता था। एक प्रकार से यह विवाह की रजिस्ट्री होती थी।

शादी के बाद विदा करते समय लड़की को डोली में बैठा कर भेजा जाता था। इस डोली को झपानक कहते थे। उस समय की औरतें एवं लड़कियां अक्सर झपानक में ही कहीं आया जाया करती थीं। साधारण स्थिति वाले लोगों के यहाँ झपानक नहीं होने पर कोठियों मंगवा लिया जाता था। कुछ समय पूर्व तक राजवाडी (राजा विजय सिंह जी दुधोरिया) में एक झपानक था।

I have collected some information about Sadhu and Sadhwi Maharaj from Azimganj-Jiaganj. These are neither complete nor accurate. I urge everybody from Shaharwali society to correct and complete this info by providing any info including photograph and video.

Mr. Pradyot Sethia S/ O Shri Keshrichand Sethia has provided some useful information and I am thankful to him for the same.

1. Sadhu Ramanik Sagar Ji Maharaj from Bishan Chand Bachchhawat Family of Azimganj. He is not alive.His guru is unknown to me.

2. Acharya Padma Sagar Suri Ji Maharaj, (Azimganj) disciple of Acharya Kalyan Sagar Ji (Acharya Buddhi Sagar Suri Singhara, Tapagachchha)

3. Shree Teju babu Dugar’ s son (Name unknown to me) Sadhu Sudarshan Kirti Sagar Ji Maharaj, desciple of Acharya Charukirti Sagar Ji (Acharya Buddhi Sagar Suri Singhara, Tapagachchha)

4. Sadhwi Charuyasha Shree Ji Maharaj (Kumari Mala Dugar) sister of Mr. Arun and Mr. Barun Dugar of Jiaganj. She is in Acharya Arihant Siddha Suri Singhara of Tapagachchha.

5. Sadhwi Shraddhanwita Shree Ji maharaj (Shraddha Lodha- d/o Shrimati Sheela and late Shri Ishwar Chand lodha of Kolkata), Disciple of Sadhwi Shri Shashiprabha Shri Ji Maharaj of Khartargachchha. Shrimati Sheela is daughter of late Shri Dhirendra Pat and Shrimati Kusum Kumari Kothari of Azimganj. She is disciple of Sadhwi Shashiprabha Sri Ji maharaj in Khartar Gachchh..

6. Sadhu Shri Het Vijay ji lived in Jiaganj for a long time till his death.

सत्रह भेदी पूजा

सत्रह भेदी पूजा १६ वीं सदी के जैन कवि श्री साधू कीर्ति की संगीतमय रचना है। भारतीय शास्त्रीय (मार्ग) संगीत की इतनी उत्कृष्ट कोटि की कोई दूसरी रचना जैन भक्ति साहित्य में उपलब्ध नहीं है। यह हिन्दी में लिखी गई सब से प्राचीन जैन पूजा भी है। साधू कीर्ति अकबर प्रतिवोधक चौथे दादा साहब श्री जिन चंद्र सूरी के आज्ञा अनुयायी थे। वे श्वेताम्बर मूर्तिपूजक समुदाय के खरतर गच्छ आम्नाय के थे। 

संवत १६१८ ( ईश्वी सन १५६२) में अनहिलपुर में उन्होंने इस पूजा की रचना की थी। साधू कीर्ति प्रख्यात गायक हरिदास, बैजू बाबरा व तानसेन के समकालीन थे। तत्कालीन भारतीय मार्ग संगीत की उत्कृष्टता सत्रह भेदी पूजा में परिलक्षित होती है। इस पूजा में अनेक रागों का प्रयोग किया गया है। 

पूजा की भूमिका राग सरपदी में है जबकि पहली न्हवन पूजा में राग देसाख, सारंग व मल्हार का प्रयोग हुआ है। दूसरी विलेपन पूजा राग रामगिरी एवं विलावल में है व इसका दोहा राग ललित में गाया जाता है। तीसरी वस्त्र युगल पूजा राग गौडी व वैराडी में है। चौथी वासक्षेप पूजा का दोहा भी राग गौडी में लिखा गया है। इस पूजा का प्रथम चरण राग सारंग में है तथा दूसरा चरण राग गौडी व पूर्वी का मिश्रण है। पांचवीं पुष्पारोहन पूजा राग कामोद व कानडा में गाया जाता है। छठी मलारोहन पूजा का दोहा राग आशावरी में तथा पूजा का प्रथम चरण रामगिरी गुर्जरी राग में है। दूसरा चरण फिर से राग आशावरी में ही है। सातवीं वर्ण पूजा केदारी गौडी व राग भैरवी में है। आठवीं गंधवटी पूजा का प्रारम्भ दोहे के स्थान पर सोरठे से किया है एवं पूजा में राग सोरठ व सामेरी का प्रयोग किया गया है। नवमी ध्वज पूजा में वस्तु छंद का उपयोग किया है जिसे राग मेघ गौडी में गाया गया है। पूजा का दूसरा चरण राग नटटनारायण में है। दसवीं आभरण पूजा का दोहा राग केदार में गाया जाता है व पूजा का प्रथम चरण राग अधवास या गूढ़ मल्हार में। पूजा का दूसरा चरण पुनः राग केदार में ही है। ग्यारहवीं फूलघर पूजा का पहला चरण रामगिरी कौतकिया में जबकि दूसरा चरण शुद्ध रामगिरी में है। वाराहवी पुष्प वर्षा के दोहे को वर्षा से संवंधित राग मल्हार में पिरोया गाया है तथा इसका पहला चरण गूढ़ मिश्र मल्हार का प्रतिनिधित्व करता है। पूजा का दूसरा चरण भी मल्हार की ही एक अन्य जाति भीम मल्हार में गुम्फित है। तेरहवीं अष्ट मांगलिक पूजा कल्याण कारक होने से इसका दोहा राग कल्याण में लिया है। पूजा का दूसरा चरण भी कल्याण राग में ही है जबकि पहला चरण वसंत राग में। चौदहवीं धुप पूजा राग विलावल व राग मालवी गौडी में है। पंद्रहवीं पूजा गीत पूजा है जिसमे पहले आर्यावृत्त छंद में संस्कृत की रचना है व दुसरे चरण को श्री राग में प्रस्तुत किया गया है। सोलहवीं नाटक पूजा प्राकृत भाषा के शार्दुल विक्रीडित छंद से प्रारम्भ होता है जिसे राग शुद्ध नट में गाने का निर्देशन है। पूजा का अगला चरण राग नट त्रिगुण में है। सत्रहवीं वाजित्र पूजा राग मधु माधवी में गाया जाता है। पूजा का अन्तिम कलश राग धन्या श्री में है। 

इस प्रकार भारतीय मार्ग (शास्त्रीय) संगीत के विशिष्ट रागों में गुम्फित यह  भक्ति व श्रृंगार रस प्रधान रचना कुल १०८ कवित्त की है। इसे पढने वाले अब कम रह गए है। अजीमगंज जियागंज में आज भी यह पूजा प्रचलित है। आज इस दुर्लभ कृति के संरक्षण व पुनः प्रचलन की आवश्यकता है । इस दिशा में ठोस कदम उठाने की जरुरत है।

अजीमगंज में पूजा

अजीमगंज जियागंज में अनेक धार्मिक अनुष्ठान होते थे एवं होते हैं। यहाँ मंदिरों में विभिन्न प्रकार की पूजाएँ पढ़ाई जाती थी। मंदिरों में प्रति दिन स्नात्र पूजा होती थी। इसके अलावा यहाँ नवपद जी की पूजा का विशेष महत्वा था। ओलीजी के आलावा भी हर महीने कम से कम एक वार नवपद जी की पूजा जरूर होती थी। ओलीजी के समय नवपद मंडल की पूजा श्री नेमिनाथ जी के मन्दिर में वर्षों से बड़े धूमधाम के साथ होती है। श्री हरख चंद जी रुमाल ने सब से पहले यह पूजा श्री नेमिनाथ जी के मन्दिर में शुरू करवाई थी. पहले यहाँ श्री सम्भवनाथ जी के मन्दिर में दुगड़ परिवार की और से करवाया जाता था।
हर खुशी के मौके पर जैसे शादी होने पर या कोई बड़ी तपस्या (अट्ठाई, मासक्षमन आदि) करने पर सत्रह भेदी पूजा करवाने का रिवाज़ था।
किसी की मौत होने पर अथवा व्रत धारण करने पर बारह व्रत की पूजा करवाई जाती थी।
इसके अलावा पञ्च कल्याणक, पञ्च ज्ञान, पञ्च परमेष्ठी, वीस स्थानक अदि की पूजाएँ भी होती थी।
दादाबाडी में भाव पूर्वक दादा गुरु की पूजा करवाई जाती है।
यहाँ पर काफी अच्छे गायक कलाकार थे एवं आज भी हैं। यहाँ पूजाएँ बहुत अच्छी तरह से विधि विधान के साथ व सुंदर गायकी से होता है।

My last meeting with Manichand Bothra

It is very difficult to believe that my friend Manichand (Manish) Bothra is no more!!

He was a loving and caring personality. He had friends but no enemeys.

He was my childhood friend though much younger. We worked together in Azimganj Mahavira Mandal for long time in seventies and eighties while living in Azimganj.

We could not meet since several years as I live in Jaipur and he was in the native place Azimganj. I could meet him on the occasion of Chaturmaas Pravesha. It was June 30Th night. I reached Azimganj. My friend Sunil, presently secretary, Azimganj Shreesangh called me in the midnight. While meeting him he asked me to conduct the ceremoney next day. Manichnd had been assigned for the same originally. I told Sunil to continue with the original schedule but he forced me to take the charge. Manichand also insisted me to do so. He briefed me about the programme in that night.

On July 1st, morning hours, Sunil had asked me to start the programme but Manichand had some thing else in his mind. He told Sunil that he would rather call me and hand over the charge of announcement. He invited me to conduct the meeting and handed over the charge.

There were several singers in the programme that had to take long time. Due to time constraints I requested him not to sing. He accepted it without opposing. I could not forgive myself if my proposal was carried out. Pujya Maharaj Saheb asked him to sing his bhajan and we all could hear his voice for the last time.

While returning back to Kolkata in the same night, I incidentally met him just outside his shop. I requested him to come with me to residence of Suraj Nowlakha where my baggage were. He denied once as he had to close his shop. I had requested him again to be with me for a while and he accepted. We went together to Suraj and from there to Pujya Maharaj Saheb. While walking I told him to provide me with an audio cassete of Satraha Bhedi puja. I also requested him to collect stories about Azimganj from his father Shree Shitalchand Bothra for this blog. I wanted to get something about Azimganj from his father that could be lost due to his old age.
Who could imagine that Manichand would leave us in two days!!!!

I left Azimganj that day. The next afternoon, in Kolkata Dadabari, the bad news came in. Manichand was hospitalized out of cerebral thrombosis. Sunil reported me in the evening that Manichand was recovering and nothing to be worried. But the next morning he was brought to Kolkataas situation deteriorating. Doctors could not control situation and he was put in ventilator. Situation continued to deteriorate and he was shifted to MRI, Gariahat on 4th of July. He went into deep comma and breathed his last on that very day.

I have lost my loving friend!~! This is an irreparable loss to Azimganj sangh.

१ जुलाई २००९ को जैन साध्वी श्री शशिप्रभा श्री जी का अजीमगंज में चातुर्मास प्रवेश महोत्सव पूर्वक हुआ। प्रातः ७ बजे बिस्कुट फैक्ट्री से जुलुश बैंड बाजे सहित रवाना हुआ । सभी लोग परंपरागत शहरवाली पोशाक में थे। चुन्नटदार धोती, केशरिया कुरता व दुपट्टा मन को मोह रहा था। श्री शांतिनाथ स्वामी के मन्दिर में दर्शन करते हुए जुलुश आगे बढ़ा। हर घर के बाहर साध्वी मंडल के स्वागत में बैनर लगा था। हर घर में गहुली कर उनका स्वागत किया गया। बंगाली समाज की औरतें भी स्वागत में पीछे नही थी। वे शंख ध्वनि कर उनके आगमन पर हर्ष व्यक्त कर रहीं थीं।

श्री नेमिनाथजी के पंचायती मन्दिर में सामूहिक दर्शन व चैत्यवंदन कर साध्वी श्री ने उपाश्रय में प्रवेश किया व सभी को मंगलिका प्रदान किया। उसके बाद जुलुश पुरे जैन पट्टी की परिक्रमा कर फाटक होते हुए सिंघी सदन पहुँचा जहाँ पर भव्य कार्यक्रम आयोजित किया गया।

सर्व प्रथम साध्वीजी ने मंगलाचरण किया. उसके बाद महिला मंडल, अजीमगंज के द्वारा स्वागत गीत गाया गया. स्थानीय एवं बाहर से पधारे हुए विशिष्ट अतिथिओं को मंच पर आसीन कराया गया एवं उनका बहुमान किया गया। अजीमगंज संघ के मंत्री श्री सुनील चोरडिया ने स्वागत भाषण दिया। अखिल भारतीय खरतर गच्छ महासंघ के अध्यक्ष श्री पदम चंद नाहटा, सम्मेत शिखर तीर्थ के अध्यक्ष श्री कमल सिंह रामपुरिया, कलकत्ता बड़े मन्दिर के मानद मंत्री श्री कांतिलाल मुकीम, मुर्शिदाबाद संघ के पूर्व अध्यक्ष श्री शशि नवलखा, श्री ज्ञान चंद लुनावत, श्री महेंद्र परख, टाटानगर के श्री कमल वैद, बालाघाट की श्रीमती नीता लुनिया आदि ने भी सभा को संवोधित किया।

कलकत्ता के स्वनाम धन्य गायक श्री सुरेन्द्र बेगानी ने अपने भजन से सभी को आह्लादित किया। उनके अलावा मनिचंद बोथरा, मोहित बोथरा, किशोर सेठिया अदि ने भी भजन प्रस्तुत किया। साध्वी श्री के गुरुपूजन का लाभ श्रीमती कुसुमदेवी चोरडिया परिवार ने लिया.

अतिथिओं का स्वागत अजीमगंज श्री संघ के अध्यक्ष श्री शीतल चंद बोथरा, मुर्शिदाबाद संघ के अध्यक्ष श्री ज्योति कोठारी आदि ने अतिथिओं का माल्यार्पण कर, तिलक लगा कर, व स्मृति चिह्न भेंट कर स्वागत किया.
सभा को साध्वी श्री सम्यग्दर्शना श्री जी व साध्वी श्री शशिप्रभा श्री जी ने भी मंगल प्रवचन से लाभान्वित किया. अंत में साध्वी श्री शशिप्रभा श्री जी के मंगलाचरण के साथ सभा का समापन हुआ.

कार्यक्रम का संचालन जयपुर के श्री ज्योति कोठारी ने किया।
सभा के बाद साधर्मी वात्सल्य का आयोजन हुआ।
